Enhanced Geothermal Systems: Good Concept but Commercially Viable?

With a need for cheaper renewable energy on a vast scale, conventional geothermal energy has long been seen as a reliable source of energy, based primarily along continental boundaries. With the potential to produce energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) has been seen as a viable renewable resource which if successful could help the US meet its energy needs by exploiting the approximately 500,000 MWe of EGS resources.

Advantages of EGS include:

  • Little to no greenhouse gases
  • Improving existing geothermal wells to increase productivity
  • Increasing energy production by producing geothermal energy in new environments and at various depths
  • Will create high-paying, long-term jobs. In  2008, the geothermal industry accounted for 25,000 jobs

However, EGS does not come without its difficulties – it is a costly, technically challenging and socially sensitive projects. So far EGS has relied on government funding worldwide, it is now time to analyse and discuss whether EGS will move away from this reliance and will eventually attract private investment. With the likes of Google.org already heavily encouraging EGS it certainly looks promising.

To get further insight into the current opportunities EGS has to offer , EyeforEnergy is giving away two exclusive presentations from  EGS experts : Susan Petty, President of AltaRock and Michal Moore, Senior Fellow of Institute for Sustainable, Energy, Environment and Economy in celebration of the launch of the 2nd Annual EGS Conference , June 29th- 30th , San Jose, California.
